About Samuel Levi-Jones

Samuel Levi-Jones (American, b. 1978) is a Chicago-based artist who works with deconstructed academic books and reference volumes, reconfiguring them as abstract collage paintings and sculptures.  At the center of his practice is the questioning of institutional power structures that define knowledge and the parameters of equality and exclusion. In his etching series made at Paulson Fontaine Press, Levi-Jones used as printing matrices legal case law books, volumes on African-American art history and medical history, and the outlines of football skins, flattening and obscuring their original forms with the addition of color.
